Midlands Cleft Rescue is a dedicated, UK based rescue committed to saving and supporting vulnerable puppies - particularly those born with cleft palates and other complex medical needs. We work tirelessly to give these puppies a second chance at life through specialist care, experienced foster homes, and a compassionate support network. Many of the pups who come to us require intensive feeding support, veterinary treatment, ongoing medical management and we ensure every single one receives the love, dignity, and expert care they deserve.

Our mission is simple: no puppy should be denied a future. Through rescue, rehabilitation, education, and community support, we are changing outcomes - one tiny life at a time!

Frequently asked questions

How do I adopt?

If you’re interested in adopting one of our puppies, the first step is to complete our application form.

Once we receive your application, we’ll review it and be in touch to discuss suitability, your home environment, and the specific needs of the puppy you’re interested in.

Our goal is always to ensure the right match (for both you and the puppy) so we may ask additional questions and arrange a home check before proceeding.

Is there an adoption fee?

Yes. Our adoption fee is £550.

This helps cover the significant costs involved in rescuing and caring for vulnerable puppies, including:

  • Veterinary assessments
  • Vaccinations
  • Microchipping
  • Specialist feeding support
  • Surgery (where required)
  • Ongoing medical care

Every adoption fee goes directly back into helping us save more at risk puppies.

Can I donate?

There are three main ways to support us:

  • Donate via PayPal (midlandscleftrescue@gmail.com)
  • Purchase much needed items from our essential puppy items list

Every donation, no matter the size, helps us continue saving vulnerable puppies who would otherwise have no chance.

Yes, we are always incredibly grateful for foster homes.

Fostering plays a vital role in giving our puppies a safe, loving environment while they receive treatment, grow stronger, or wait for their forever home.

What does fostering involve?

Fostering a special needs puppy can vary depending on their condition, but may include:

We provide guidance and support throughout. You won’t be alone, we’re always on hand to help. Veterinary costs related to rescue care are covered by us.

Can I help with transport?

Yes, transport support is hugely valuable.

We often need help transporting puppies to foster homes, veterinary appointments, or forever families. If you’re able to assist with transport (even occasionally), please get in touch, it truly makes a difference.

I have a puppy born with a cleft palate or disability, can you help?

If you have a puppy born with a cleft palate or another disability, please give us a call (07398059439 for England or 07387003493 for Scotland) and complete our surrender form so we can assess the situation.

What is a cleft palate or cleft lip in puppies?

A cleft palate is an opening in the roof of a puppy’s mouth that occurs during development in the womb.

A cleft lip is a split or opening in the upper lip and may occur on its own or alongside a cleft palate.

These conditions make feeding difficult and cause milk to enter the nasal passages, increasing the risk of infection and aspiration. Early specialist care is essential for survival. These pups cannot feed from their mum and their best chance is to be tube fed by a trained professional.

Can dogs live a normal life with a cleft palate?

Yes, they certainly can!

With proper care and assisted feeding in the early weeks, many cleft affected puppies go on to live happy, active, loving lives.

What other disabilities do you support?

We support puppies with all disabilities and additional needs.

This may include neurological conditions, limb differences, incontinence, sensory impairments, and other complex medical needs. We assess each puppy individually, work with specialist vets where needed and come up with a care / treatment plan to have them thriving and living their best possible life as quickly as is safe for them!

Why are these puppies often euthanised?

Sadly, puppies born with cleft palates or visible disabilities are often euthanised shortly after birth.

This is usually due to:

  • The intensive feeding required in the early weeks
  • The cost of specialist veterinary care and surgery
  • Lack of awareness that survival is possible
  • Limited rescue spaces

At Midlands Cleft Rescue, we believe these puppies deserve a chance. With the right support, many go on to thrive.
