Bernie

Bernie was surrendered to us at just three weeks old with atresia ani, a rare birth defect where the anal opening fails to develop properly and remains blocked by a membrane. As you can imagine, this meant tiny Bernie had never been able to pass stool and was in extreme pain and discomfort.

We didn’t mess about. We contacted multiple vet practices across both England and Scotland to find someone confident in performing such a delicate surgery on such a tiny puppy and who could get her in straight away.

Bernie underwent specialist surgery at just three weeks old, costing the rescue £800 and initially everything seemed to be going in the right direction.

Unfortunately, Bernie’s journey didn’t end there.

Despite her first surgery, Bernie has since needed to undergo a second operation. Of course, when we realised she needed further treatment there was never any question about whether we would go ahead - we just needed to give her the best possible chance.

With two specialist surgeries, Bernie’s veterinary bill has now reached £1,600.

When we originally set up Bernie’s fundraiser, we were hoping to raise the £800 needed to cover her first operation. We never expected that just a short time later we would be facing the same cost all over again.

Bernie has already been through more in the first few weeks of her life than any puppy should but she is a little fighter and we’re doing everything we can to give her the future she deserves.

If you can spare anything towards Bernie’s £1,600 veterinary bill, we would be incredibly grateful. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us continue providing specialist treatment to puppies like Bernie when they come through our doors needing urgent help.

And if you aren’t in a position to donate, simply sharing Bernie’s fundraiser helps us more than you know.

Thank you for continuing to support Bernie and our little rescue.
